lollapalooza day two

matt & kim
the headline on their myspace site reads: "an onstage pizza party", and fuck if that's not dead on. it's likely you've never heard 'em before, so please check them out at myspace.com/mattandkim. it's just two kids from brooklyn, jamming and having a great time. their stage presence is legendary, and i guarantee that anyone who watches them perform will become an instant fan. after they played, they actually came off the stage and out into the crowd to meet the fans, take pictures, and sign autographs... awesome. kim is a tomboy, but she's a hot tomboy. they're playing chicago again, on october 2 @ logan square auditorium. get a ticket... let's go!

i'm from barcelona

if there was one band that was the surprise unknown of lollapalooza, it was this band. with an ensemble cast of musicians and vocalists dancing in all sorts of costumes and unique outfits, it seemed as though this band was raised in a circus. i mean shit, early in the set, lead singer, emanuel lundgren, crowd surfed on a yellow inflatable pool raft!and later on, in the middle of a song, lundgren asked the crowd if anyone had a kazoo, and lo and behold he takes this kid out of the crowd, kazoo in hand, and has him play into the microphone. genius! this is a fun band, whose music is much better live than on myspace, but you get the idea. one final tidbit... i'm from barcelona is from sweden. wtf?

cheryl
so i went to high school with this girl, but i've never really had the chance to get to know her. throughout the years, we've bumped into each other here and there, but never for any decent amount of time... until lolla, and i spent much of the time with her, wondering why in hell we never hung out before. we got good and drunk, buying drinks back and forth, and she ended up hanging out until late in the evening. ah... too bad she's not single... wink.

we went to see css, but apparently they got stuck in the airport at new york, so they weren't gonna make it. so matt & kim came back on to do a second set! matt seemed even more insane than the early show, and cheryl speculated that he was wasted, which was probably true.

roy spent much of the day pronouncing regina, "rejiina"... like vagina. that should show you how much he wanted to see her. emer was falling asleep listening to her. but i can tell you that she's an amazing performer. i don't believe that lolla was the right venue for her style, but it was nice to get sample of her live performance. i think that going to a small theater type venue would be ideal to get the most out of her music, but i wouldn't be caught dead in there. i can feel my balls receding, just thinking about it. let's just say that i'm glad she was at lolla, because guys were able to listen to her and not feel... well... gay. she was great.

odds and ends
from this point on, i begin to fade into drunkedness... snow patrol was great, but for whatever reason, we didn't get close to the stage. i think we were all comfortable with our position, and the sound was great, so we stayed a good distance away. we caught a couple tracks from yeah yeah yeahs, got rained on for spoon, rocked out to the end of patti smith, and finished with a solid performance by interpol, who was great live. i was ripped. roy's guest blog pretty much finishes the night.

Dar and Tim are crazy - they decided to go running at 7 am. So Bri and I got to the park early and started off with Matt and Kim around 11ish, who were a great band to start the day off with. Lots of energy and fun vibes. We got pictures with the cute tomboy drummer who had biceps bigger than most guys. She was hot.

Then Bri and I went to see I'm from Barcelona and our minds were blown. They had about 15 people on stage, each dressed really weird. Awesome psychedelic pop rock. Bri and I were totally psyched since we got 2 homeruns from these unknown bands. Bri and I started cracking up during the show since the singers had weird accents: "Souveniers, party favors, and novelties!" They sang a song about Chicken Pox that goes "You can't get it, once you've had it!"

After that, we went to get some food and listened to Tapes n' Tapes (we weren't impressed by the music nor the food). Saw a bit of Pete Yorn (he was only OK - although he did a cover of Young Folks - without whistling!!! WTF???).

Then Bri and I went to Stephen Marley - he sounds just like Bob. We got to hear "No Woman, No Cry" Then we left early to get a spot for Cold War Kids and met up with Tim, Dar, Emer, and Cheech. Bri found his friend Cheryl. Cold War Kids started off shaky, but they got better midway through their set. Then everyone left for Rhymefest. I stayed behind for Cold War Kids - They sound progressivly beter live and their cover of Lennon's "Well, well, well" was outstanding.

I chose to see Clap Your Hands alone over the Roots with everyone else and they were awesome. Clap Your Hands did all their old hits. Bri and Cheryl left to see Matt and Kim again (who were substituting for CSS). Mainly I wanted to get a good spot for The Hold Steady (everyone wanted to see Regina Specktor). And Hold Steady did not disappoint. They were unbelievable live. They looked like they were having the time of their life. And they told the crowd, "This is incredible. I mean, we started the band 4 years ago practicing once a week - mainly to drink beer, and last week we got a call to open for The Rolling Stones in Dublin!" So that was a special performance. It was sincere and truly heartfelt. Lots of fun too - all of their songs are about getting wasted and meeting girls.

After that, I found everyone else at Snow Patrol - surprisingly good and moving - 'if i just stay here!' Then we went to see a little bit of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and all of Spoon. Spoon was only OK, it could have been the light rain. Then we head to Patti Smith - and she was rockin the crowd crazy. Swearing left and right.

The mood was getting really atmospheric - then, finally, Interpol! Interpol was spooky and cool - they sound like they do on their album and some songs reminded us of The Pixies. Bri, Tim, Emer, Dar, Cheech, Cheryl and I were UNBELIEVABLY wasted. We spent all of Interpol doing these artsy digital photo shots.

We start screaming things from the moment we leave the park onto the blue line. Yet somehow we make it to Wicker Park for drinks at Nick's Beer Garden! We really lucked out since there was a great blues band playing, it wasn't too crowded and there was no cover!
We drank there and then we went to Rodan to meet up with Jing and Nate, Dar's sis and cousin, and drink some more. At one point in the night I remember buying a hot dog. Next thing I know I am waking up on the couch at Tim and Dar's and the empty wrapper of MY hot dog is lying next to Bri's satisfied face.

K, didn't think Roy was that conscious the whole time. I was convinced he was the most wasted, although he did make a few mistakes. Correct him if you choose...

...and I was not with you during Interpol. I went with Starbucks guy to get food and meet you over there, but your battery died. Then I smoked some really good weed and was stoned within two seconds after smoking it. Now... I am embarrassed to see Starbucks guy 'cause, well, I am also his hygienist and he doesn't smoke weed. So I ditched him saying I was meeting up with you because I was getting majorly claustrophobic... and watched the concert by myself... STONED.
that was when we reunited... just f---n bumped into each other out of no where... then blue line, Nicks, and Rodan where we met Dar's sister, whom I did not remember meeting, so I reintroduced myself to her like a fool the next day.

lastly, i just wanted to reiterate what cheryl said about us bumping into her... my phone was dead and i was the only one with her number, so when we didn't find her, i figured that i'd just give her a call the next day. in the flurry of the crowd, on the way out of the park, i saw her talking on her phone... just spotted her out of nowhere. crazy.
